Drugs, Drink,Violence,Pain,Guilt, - where will it all end?
Is there any hope for society, our country, the world?
Someone once said: “The heart of the human problem, is the problem of the human heart”
We live in a messed up world which comes as a result of a breakdown of relationships with each other and with God. These broken relationships are a result of our sin (sin really means putting ourselves at the centre instead of God and others, it also means missing the mark of what God would have for us) The reality is that however good we might think we are the Bible says that ‘all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3 v 23)
The Bible states in Isaiah 59 v 2: ‘Yours sins have separated you from your God’ Thankfully God had a plan to deal with the problem of sin. The Christian message is about reconciliation to God and to each other. We may try to be good, we may even be religious, but reconciliation is not something we can do ourselves. In our world today there are many voices suggesting ways to God and this can be confusing. We do need to recognise that if one thing is true, that which conflicts with it cannot also be true. Jesus Christ made the claim that He is ‘The way the truth and the life’ and that ‘no-one comes to the Father except through him’ (John 14 V6). The fact is that Jesus came into the world to die on the cross for us as the only means of forgiving our sin, giving us a fresh start, and therefore enabling us to enter into a relationship with God. The Bible states that if we confess our sin ‘He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sin’. In other words ‘the slate is wiped clean’ when we receive this free gift of God.
God’s part in terms of reconciliation was to send Jesus to die on the cross, but that was not the end, Jesus rose from the dead and is alive today. Our part is to repent of our sin (this means a change of heart and a change of life), believe that Jesus died for us to take away our sin and for us to receive his forgiveness.
Becoming a Christian means having a new start. In the Bible this is referred to as being born again. It means that we are in a new and personal relationship with God. Not only do we receive forgiveness when we become a Christian but we are given the Holy Spirit who empowers us to live out our lives in the way that God intended, loving Him and others as ourselves.
